It's official. I've started on the case. My finger hurts.
I'm making a ukulele case for Jeff. One of his ukes is an odd shape and needs a custom case. Once, when he was here playing music, I traced around it and took some measurements. This was several months ago. Today I took out the tracing and got to work.
I measured out an inch from the outline and cut out a pattern. Then I traced it onto a piece of heavy cardboard and cut it out with an Xacto (which is what hurt my finger). Then I glued it onto a piece of foamcore. That's it so far. I'm waiting for the glue to dry.
I like doing stuff like this. I enjoy the process of figuring it all out. I need to buy more foamcore and cardboard. At some point Jeff will have to pick out some fabric for the cover. Other than that I think I have everything I need. Except hinges. Gotta get those.
I guess I'll take some step by step photos, too.

Coolness. He could use a gift these days. Lotsa pressure on him at the moment.
How are you going to attach a strap? Can't wait to see pics, although I guess I'll see it in person after he gets it.
I'm thinking he'll pick out a hawaiian print, or maybe not now that I've said that. Bwhahahaha.
Well, it's not really a gift. He's giving me a nice tenor uke in exchange. I'm really getting the better end of the deal. I guess the gift is for me?
The strap- I haven't worked that out yet. I'll probably talk that over with him to see what he wants.
I'm sure you'll be seeing it in process. We need to get together again soon.
Will it have a secret compartment?
Thats a pretty good exchange. Both of you get something of value.
Yeah, we should get together and do something. I was just thinking today that I wanted to make some kind of doll. LOL, got a copy of Doll Quarterly which is a fun mag to look thru.
I wonder what Jeff will put in his secret compartment? I suppose it would depend on the size of the compartment huh?
If he wants a secret compartment then he gets a secret compartment. It will probably be a small one, though. Big enough for some felt picks or condoms or whatever. I actually might be able to fit in 3 secret compartments now that I think about it. Maybe another on the outside of the case.
I could go completely crazy and make it like a field photographer's vest. Cover that sucker with pockets.
No, no, no, this thing's going to be pretty. Not girlie pretty. Guy pretty.
My dad's violin case had a nice compartment under the area where the fretboard went.
That's what I was thinking. Stick it in under the neck someplace. I can fit in 2 more on the sides where the shape of the uke pulls in.
Condoms huh? I guess Uke players have more of a groupie following than I ever dreamed of.
Better give him lots of compartments.
Well, it was more of a description of the size of the compartment. He can use it as he pleases.
I've noticed lately that these guys keep referring to their instruments as some kind of living female entities. Keeping condoms in a uke case seems appropriate.
Their instruments. Hmmmm, are you playing straight man for me?
Hmm, now that I think about it (ignoring the condom references), violins don't have fretboards.
Oh well.
That's ok, sweetie. I knew what you meant.
Virginia- Straight man, no. I'm just doing that crude/silly thing I do that sometimes gets me in trouble.
Ok, I'm putting it down and stepping away.
Slowly...
Slowly...
There.
Man, you've got restraint. I have little. I'm proud of you.
Please wash your hands before you start working on my uke case again.
The uke cases I have all have compartments at the base of the neck for accessories. Also, each one has a seatbelt, so that, if you forget to zip the case, the uke won't fall out. These are usually made of velcro, but the velcro usually falls apart. A nice chrod that I could tie would be nice.
Also, any additional compartments would always come in handy.
I was already planning on adding a cord to hold the uke in the case. It might not be necessary because there is going to be inch thick foam surrounding the whole thing. I think it's going to be a snug fit.
I will put in as many compartments as I can without it getting ridiculous.
Right now I'm working on adding the sides. It's a bit tricky. It wants to go all wobbly. I took a piece of foam core and cut grooves into it so it will go around a curve. Then I glued it around the base where the gear head of the uke will be. I'm going to do this around the whole thing and then glue a strip of poster board to it to add strength and stability.
You probably didn't want to know the details of its construction. This is what I do when I get into a project. I want to share all the details of the process. One of these days we need to go to a fabric store and pick out a cover fabric. I have lots of red velvet for the interior. If you have something different in mind we can do that. We also need to talk about a strap or some kind of handle.
Doing this is good for my brain.
