And it's not even my birthday yet

I got a very nice surprise lunch at work today. They all know that I'm starting a very strict diet on Thursday so they gave me an early party. Usually for office birthdays we just have cake and eat it standing up. Today everyone brought potluck- Chicken, salad, layered dip, potato salad and cookies. They set up a table in the common area and we had a nice sit down lunch.

After work I met the girls and Gabe and Ken at Joe's Sushi. Ken's been wanting to go out for sushi with us and since I'm not going to be able to have any for six months I figured tonight's the night. We got there just before they opened. Ken and I sat at the bar. When the girls arrived Jin saw that they were carrying gifts. When he saw that they were for me he brought over a BIG bottle of hot sake and a whole bottle of wine for me to take home. And it wasn't cheap sake, either. This was the good stuff. I shared it with Ken.

Our chef was having fun dreaming up marvelous sushi structures for us. Freakin' deeelish! One one of the plates of sushiu he put down a blob of wasabi, stuck a lighted birthday candle in it and covered it with a very thinly sliced cylinder of cucumber. It looked like a pretty lantern. A very nice touch. At the end of the meal they had me get up on a chair (ha! I couldn't climb up all the way so I perched on my knees), gave me a bowl of green tea ice cream and had the whole restaurant sing Happy Birthday to me. It was a great Joe's experience.

The girls gave me some fun gifts (wrapped in the most gorgeous paper. I wonder where they got it?). I got some cute skeleton lights, some cat candles and a big, ceramic cat head that will make a great candy dish. They also gave me a Dwight Shrute stress reliever. It's a squeezable, rubber Dwight head. They also paid for most of the dinner. Ken bought mine. Thanks, everyone!

Tomorrow I go for the first weight loss class. I'll be going once a week. On Thursday I'll start the diet. Here we go! 800 calories a day!

800 calories a day??? Aye yae yae! Is this a Kaiser plan? Wow, you are really gonna drop some pounds!

Happy Birthday, and I'm sorry I can never, ever remember the exact day!

No one should have to live on 800 calories a day. Are you sure this is healthy? I'm pretty concerned now! Even 1000 is pretty low. Is this just a "quick start" temporary thing?
Truthfully, small portions, daily exercise and few restrictions (lifestyle changes, not a "diet that you go on and off of) is the way to permanently lose weight.
Since it's sponsored by a health insurance co., I'm assuming it's a balanced and healthy diet. I wish you luck and let us know how it's going!
Working 40 hrs a week it's hard to fit excercise in-I walk on my 1/2 hr lunch (for the full 1/2 hr) and grab some soup or yogurt while I'm on a quick break- is that an option for you? I also teach my cardio-sculpt class once a week at the health club-is there a structured thing you can attend? Pilates would be great too!

What day IS your birthday? It's not your birthday or it is your birthday? I'm confused! If it is, Happy Birthday, if it isn't (as per your title) then Happy Early Birthday.

800 calories, eh? Yikes! What exactly are you able to eat?

Nancy- I'm getting fuzzy on the birthdays, too. I need to get them all on the computer. More Fall birthdays comin' up!

Anne- I'm planning to take a Pilates class at the jc. It'll count as my PE requirement. When it's not too hot I'll take walks around my building during my two 15 minute breaks. And then there's the Rube.

Virginia- My birthday is tomorrow. No plans. I'm going to see my dad. Maybe I'll go to the movies.

One thing I forgot about last night. Just before I left the chef handed me a carrot rose. It's really cool. It looks like a tiny orange rose. They do love us at Joe's.

The diet- It's not going to be this way for the entire 6 months but I'll be drinking these protein shakes (they call it "supplement")for 2 of my meals and then having a good ol' sensible dinner. Except that dinner can't be more than 300 calories. I'll also be drinking lots of water. It is kind of a jumpstart thing. Also, there's counseling, like, for the rest of my life, as long as I'm on Kaiser. There are some possible side effects, which is why they do a medical check-in before each class.

At first I didn't feel very good about this decision. I didn't feel hopeful or very confident that I'd be successful. But something had to be done. I've been borderline diabetic for several years now. I feel weak most of the time. I've wasted too much of my life being this heavy. I just want to feel good and live longer.

Dean- Um, I got one with two wheels. I'd have to go outside and look at it. It's kinda mountain bikey but appropriate for city riding. And yeah! Once the weather cools down a bit I want to start riding again.

Jeff and Kyle- Thank you!

Mary- Heh! I've thought about that Devil Wears Prada diet. Hell, it worked for her.
