My first pass through the records

I pulled one set of shelves out of the thruck this morning. I opened up the box and took them out piece by piece. Banging them together was easy. All I needed was a rubber mallet. I think they'll work nicely. I'm going to order some record boxes online so I can box them up as I go along.

I went out to the barn and pulled out some records. They're not in order anymore but the catagories are still mostly intact. It's too hard to read the spines so you just have to grab some and pull them out to see what they are. I brought back 25 albums. Some I picked just because the covers were so intriguing.

Elsa Lanchester- Songs For A Shuttered Parlor. She's on the cover looking completely crazy.
Rusty Warren- Two albums by her. She's a comedienne form the 60's
Some Hawaiian stuff
Some middle eastern music
Ike and Tina Turner- Ooh-poo-pah-doo
Etta James- At Last
Some Harry Belafonte
The Mack- Film soundtrack. Richard Pryor is in it.
A couple of Sophie Tucker albums.

Not a bad start. I just wish I knew how to get the turntable hooked up. This isn't a normal stereo system in here. I think it actually is hooked up but only Jim knew how to make it work. So, ok, a future project.

Had a nice walk on the Rube tonight. If you go after 7 it's nice and cool.

Tomorrow I'll assemble the rest of the shelves.

-Hmmm... I just read that I can make some money by having ads on my blog. Should I?

Those are the one's you're keeping, yes? We *must* keep Rusty Warren!

I'll bet it won't be too difficult to get the turntable set up. We just might have to label and dismantle some of Dad's setup.

Kyle- Just 2 so far. Maybe we'll find more. I don't think I've ever heard her.

Lindsay- Yes, those are keepers. Gotta have that Ned Collection podcast one of these days. If you guys will take it on I'd love to have the turntable going. I found 3 copies of some albums. I'll want to spin them and keep the ones in the best condition.

Do you remember listening to the records on the patio at Hearn ave? I really loved doing that. Jim and I would go through the records (when they were still at Drew's) and bring some home to Santa Rosa. I always made sure we brought them back so the collection would stay intact. Stupid me. I wish I would have hung onto them. They're now buried in those shelves in the barn.

D'oh! Yes, I remember that. Especially all those hawaiian albums you found.

Wasn't dad doing some of that stuff already? Transfering records to CDs? I remember him scanning the record sleeves and turning them into CD covers so I think that's what he was doing.

Don't know how he was doing it though...

He was doing that for John Duke. So yeah, it's all set up. We just have to figure out how to work it.

Some gems from today's gleaning-

Lots of percussion stuff.

Lena Horne, Bobby Gentry, The Ventures, Booker T, The Mar-Keys, Billie Holiday, Bette Midler, Boots Randolph, George Shearing.

Some intriguing stuff. One album is called simply Bongos, Flutes, Guitars. One called Koto and Flute. We've got Valentino Tangos, Mrs. Miller's Greatest Hits (remember Mrs. Miller?), The Lecona Cuban Boys (cool cover), Burl Ives, Ed McGurdy, a Betty Hutton album called At The Saints And Sinners Ball (cool cover), An Evening With Mike Nichols and Elaine May.

And then there's one that I really wonder about. It's a folk album by a woman named Kay Huntington. I had no idea who she is but I had to check it out. She looks kind of like Ann Coulter. She's trying to be all sexy in a mini dress and go-go boots but she needs some serious eyebrow plucking and a good dentist. Some of her songs are What's Happening To Our World?, The Right To Poverty, How Can Stars Fall Down? and Can't Help Lovin' You, Baby. I guess even horse-faced killjoys need love.

Gonna go walk.

Hey, Doni - We have some of the Hawaiian albums. You brought them over, and we still have them. You should take them back to the collection when you come this weekend.
Amelia loves records and is always buying rare gems at garage sales. I'm looking at a stack of them, and right on top is "Fred Burri - Disneyland Yodler with Alphorn and Swiss-Accordion"

Oh, how cool! I love stuff like that. There are some goofy-ass things in the Ned records. Ever do Chicken Fat in jr. high or highschol? Meredith Wilson (Music Man) wrote this exercise song for the President's Council on Physical Fitness which they recorded with Robert Preston singing the lead vocal. It got sent out to schools around the country. We used to exercise to it at Sierra. It was hokey as shit but I loved it! Music Man was one of the Broadway albums we had when I was a kid. Robert Preston performed the hell out of that role. His delivery of Chicken Fat is exactly the same. (Heh! I just said delivery of chicken fat.) Anyway, there's a copy of Chicken Fat out there somewhere.

Crapola, I think I'm coming down with something. I felt fine when I was on Rubidoux, even better than yesterday. Now my joints ache, my eyeballs hurt and I feel a little nauseous. Damn it. I guess I'll see how I feel in the morning. If I'm still sick I'll spend the day in bed and hope it's gone by Thursday. That's when we're leaving for Santa Rosa.

Kyle- Touch down every morning, TEN TIMES! Back and around, back and around, back and around, now front and around, front and around, front and around!

Nancy- Well, if you collect chicken songs then you MUST have Chicken Fat. Actually, it's not really about chickens, just chicken fat. Still, I think you'll love it.

Last night was awful. Big headache, I'm all clammy, joint pain. My dad said he had the same thing yesterday. I had stuff I wanted to do today but I'm going to take it easy and hope this goes away. I was going to go downtown and watch the fireworks but I think I'll just watch them from the top of the hill. It'll be my last opportunity to do that. I hope it's clear.
