Finally

I took Dad's dog, Lady, to the vet to be put down today. I wouldn't say she was on her last legs but it was close enough for me. She was almost completely deaf and fairly blind. Lately she's been getting more and more stiff. She's been nothing but a pain in the ass ever since I took her in. Today I thought, jeez, what am I waiting for? Her life isn't going to get any better and it sucks for the rest of us having her around. She was aggressive with Charlie and the cats. Whenever I worked outside she'd bug the hell out of me by sneaking up behind me and rubbing her nose against my leg. And that behavior was CONSTANT. No matter how many times you shoo her off, she'd always come back. When I caught her today she kept trying to bite me, which made me feel just fine about my decision to bump her off.

She was an energy suck and I'm glad she's gone.

Heh! After I wrote this post I did debate whether I should publish it. But ten I figured, what the hell. Everyone I've ever talked to about that dog knows how I felt about her. Paige hated her too.

When we first brought her home she threw the pet dynamics into chaos. Gracie and Boz didn't know how to behave anymore. The cats had no fear of their dog buddies but now they had to run for their lives. I hated working in the garage and back yard because Lady was like a hyena. She was constantly coming at me. And then when Gracie and Boz saw her getting so much "attention" they would start doing the same thing. It was maddening.

I can't blame her entirely. It's not her fault she was nuts. She had been an abused stray when Dad found her. He was pretty nice to her but he kept her and his other enormous dog, Maggie, is his back yard, which was almost entirely taken up with a derelict swimming pool. They lived like that for a long time. Then Maggie died and pretty soon after that we left the farm and she moved in with us. So, I can't really blame her for being squirrely. Still...

She's gone and I'm relieved. Since we've been here I haven't allowed the dogs to come in the house. Now that we're down to just Boz I'm going to start letting him in. That is, AFTER I give him a bath!

Thanks. I had decided that I'd keep her as long as she was healthy. She was about 15 years old and had been on the decline for a few months now. I feel ok about releasing her to the great beyond.

And yes, we all feel better without her, both humans and pets.

I had to do that in January to one our our beloved dogs. Cookie just didn't have a quality existence. She couldn't hear and didn't see well. She was starting to relieve herself in the house and not too far from where she slept. It was sad, but it had to be done. She had arthritis real bad also, so it took quite an effort to just get up, so I can see why she was doing what she was doing. When I took her in, i had a nice talk to her, told her what a good dog she was to us. She seemed to understand what was going to happen. At least that's what I like to believe. wow....my word verification to have this sent is obark......what's the chances of that? maybe she'e channeling me now.

Our two "old" dogs will be 9 on October 30, and they're both spry--so I don't have to go through that for a few years.

Boz will like the house! You will cuddle the Bozzie!
